Why Spay & Neuter?

Do the math ...

Did you know: Female cats go into heat every 4 or 5 days every 3 weeks during breeding season?  Females can have up to 4 litters per year and an average litter consists of 6 kittens half of which could be females.

A female cat can have her first litter of kittens at age 5 – 6 months.  Did you know that a male kitten as young as 4 – 5 months old can make a female cat pregnant?

Veterinarians recommend that cats be a minimum of 5 – 6 months old before they are spayed or neutered,  Your veterinarian will confirm when your cat is ready.

Veterinary costs can vary but here is an idea of what 2019 local costs were to spay or neuter your dog and cat.

CATS: includes initial vaccinations, rabies, deworming and GST

Spay (female)   $321.30           Neuter (male) $274.05

DOGS: includes initial vaccinations, rabies, deworming and GST

Spay (female – under 20 kg)    $431.55           (females over 20 kg)    $494.55

Neuter (male – under 20 kg)   $358.05           (males over 20 kg)       $421.05

BENEFITS OF SPAY AND NEUTER

  • A neutered male may be better behaved
  • Unaltered (not neutered) dogs and cats are more likely to mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over your house
  • You dog might be less likely to mount other dogs, people and inanimate objects
  • Aggression problems may be avoided
  • Male dogs are less likely to roam away from home
  • An intact male will do just about anything to find a mate risking injury in traffic and fights with other male animals
  • Neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems
  • Your female pet will live a longer and healthier life
  • Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors
  • A spayed female pet won’t go into “heat”. In an effort to advertise for a mate they will yowl and urinate more frequently – sometimes all over the house.
  • The cost of spay/neuter surgery is far less than the cost of having and caring for a litter for a minimum of the first 8 weeks
  • By spaying and neutering, you are helping to control the pet population. Many healthy dogs and cats are euthanized each year simply because there aren’t enough homes to go around nor room in shelters, rescues and SPCAs.
